Advertising Is

Advertising - A campaign promoting a product or idea which can persuade or interest a target audience to purchase or use products and services. The campaign may use many different forms of media to promote a message for a set amount of time

Media platforms used in advertising:

Banners
Magazine ads - What type of magazine might the ad appear in. E.G You wont see perfume appear in a magazine about rock. The products advertised will relate to the type of magazine E.G watches in a mens magazine.

TV ads - Above the line ads it will be expensive to do however has prime time slots e.g around when x factor is on is a prime slot

Video ads - Most likely to be seen on youtube and will be about from 30 seconds to a min or two. (How do they appear on youtube? Is it at the beginning and you have to watch it? Some you can skip after 5 seconds. Little yellow tabs which include pop up ads after set time in the vid)

Social media (e.g. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.)

Flyers leaflets and panflets - Below the line advertising targeted to a specific audience. (Something directed specifically to you)
Radio ads - Above the line ads

Newspaper ads - Telegraph has popup advertisements coming up

Web pop-ups - IMDB.com has lots of pop ups for a new film trailer coming out

Billboards - Static & Interactive - Above the line advertising and is mass media advertising. Doesnt target any particular audience and is there for the masses to see. It costs alot to do however.

Advertisements more in a tabloid such as the sun as opposed to a broadsheet such as the guardian.

Email is kind of irrelevant now as more of a dumping ground for spam

Evian

Advertisements - Evian - Follows its colour scheme and branding as you can identify it as Evian.

The white colour suggests purity which leads to the purity of evian water.

Evian advert - Clearly suggests the idea that by drinking their water you will live younger and more athletically

'If you drink evian your gonna live young'

Evian associated with people who live young lives and active lives - Its all about youth.

Facebook advertisement showed that if you had a bottle of Evian you were younger. Which encourages 20-30 year olds to get the drink etc.

Boys will be boys

Contravertial because it was trying to reinvent itself and alot of men took issue in it as they felt they were being harrased by the advertisement and picks out people in america and suggests men are sexual predators and horrible people.

Research Task

Branded content is content that is linked to a brand that allows consumers to make a connection with that brand. It is a marketing technique that does not involve traditional advertising.

Its purpose is to drive engagement through content and often exists in mediums like pocasts videos articles and even live events.

The content usually tells a story, evokes an emotional response, is entertaining, or is making a social statement. Branded content is less focused on sale conversion and more interested in creating conversation around the brand.

What can branded content marketing do?

Engages through emotion or entertainment

Implements storytelling

Makes a social statement

Uses multiple mediums (including live events

Highlights brand’s values, building consumer trust

In political climate, brands have found incredible success in connecting with people’s primal needs and values. This is also where branded content gets a bad wrap. Is it just pretending to care?

Another branded content campaign comes from the collaboration of several, very unrelated, companies. Marvel, the ride sharing company, Lyft, as well as Hulu, partnered up to create the Marvel Runaway Series.

NIKE

The nike advertisement was prodominantly targeted at mainly people that might me considered in minority groups. E.G Cheering the national anthem was a black guy showing solidarity and lots of different people are celebrated such as an athlete with a hand missing showing you can do anything you put your mind to. Celebrates the paralympics and suggests if your young and have a disadvantage in life you can still dream to be these icons in sport.

Iceland

The issue with the Iceland palm oil advert was that it was banned for being too politically affecting. This is because the usage of palm oil is one of the main significant reasons for mass deforestation and therefore by using palm oil products they recieved mass boycotting directly. This is the main reason the advertisement was pulled.

Personally i think that the awareness of endangered life within the advertisement that was banned was a strong reason for the advertisement to stay up and not be banned as it created mass awareness for the endangered lives of animals.

  1. Hi Jamie,

This post looks great but you've missed a couple of things, so please get these done:

    1. Add the notes for the Nike advert Me Boon discusses
    2. Please put up your answers to the Palm Oil advert by Iceland.

    Thanks

    Mr H
