Analysing televison adverts - conventions

Use of the camera

. Extreme close up - Small section of character or object

. Close up - neck and face shows severity of a situation

. Long shot - Whole body is visible (can appreciate the setting and the area they are in)

. wide shot

. Medium shot - Shows from weist up and allows to see body language and context of setting (spiderman struggling)

. Point of view shot

. Low angle - Puts the character in a position of power and makes the viewer feel inferior

. High angle - makes the characters seem vulnerable and puts the viewer in a position of power

. Over the shoulder

Speed of shots

38 Shots overall.

This effect creates a suspension. This is because as you go through the beginning of the advertisement the shots are longer and slower. However as the ride begins to pickup speed so does the shots. Becoming more rapid and snapping harder and harder. This then lead to the shots getting more and more aggresive which creates a sense of intensity.

Voiceovers

Chris hemsworth is speaking. There is a voiceover of whats going on in the actual scene. This is to create a calm sense of reassurement. The target audience would be younger men who are trying to be more responsible and get success in work life. You can also identify that the advert is trying to connote boss cologne with formality and living the high life as during the advertisement. Chris hemsworth is presented as extremely succesfull and rich whiles using the voiceover to talk about the boss cologne. This persuades people into believing that by having boss cologne you will have greater success in life.

Diesel: Only the brave Wild Advertisement analysis

Immediatley as we look at the first seconds of the Diesel advert we can clearly see their slogan. 'For successfull living' This immediatley appeals to men who want to achieve greatness in life and dont want to fail. By having a slogan like this its almost like saying to someone if you dont take this and use it you will be a failure in life. Therefore it peer pressures them into buying it. The usage of low shots of us looking up at the individuals within the scene shows a sense of burdening power from them. It is almost as if they are extremely prominent and dominent because of the diesel cologne.

We also see a shot by shot of the man running and looking at the girl as she almost lurkes and watches him. The whole advertisement is about taking command of your life and choosing the best perfume out there. This advert is saying to people misleadingly however not falsy as its not direct, that by having this diesel cologne you are able to get the girl, take command of your life and control nature itself.

The final Shot of the advertisement shows the man looking over the whole city. This is because the order of the ad itself. It begins with the man in the wild below feeling weak but with the power of the Diesel cologne he climbs his way to the top like a lion the king of the animals and owns the whole city. This is even more supported and connoted through the visual wide over the shoulder at the end showing how nature and the wild has taken over the land with its immense power, hense the cologne being known as Diesel : wild as the voiceover says in a confident tone 'Take over tommorow!' suggesting again the superiority and dominance of owning this cologne.

Coca cola advert analysis

So as we begin with the coca cola advert we see a mid shot of a boy with some non diegetic music playing in the background. This music is presented as happy and peaceful which makes the viewers feel a warmth. We then cut to a tilt of the boys older brother walking into the room with a miscevious look on his face which suggests he is up to something. The use of a tilt can also suggest within the scene that the brother looks down on his brother and bullies him as shown with him looking down at his younger brother as well as is shown further on in the advertisement. Also, we see a coca cola bottle placed in the shot of the brothers which is a good representation of product placement.

Through this advert we are presented as the older brother being mean to his younger brother, this is further supported in the rain scene where we see the older brother with an umbrella not letting his younger brother stay under the umbrella forcing him to get wet. Whiles this is going on the usage of a long shot pan is in place which can suggest the height of power the older brother has compared the the smaller brother.

We then cut onto a mid shot of the younger brother being bullied by some random teenagers who have taken his coca cola drink and he is presented as weak. However the next shot shows a low angle looking up at the older brother there to defend his younger brother as he scares off the bullies and then procceeds to take the glass of coca cola and hand it to his brother, showing that although he messes his younger brother around alot in the end he cares for him alot and will protect him by any means. The end of the advert shows the coca cola logo and the iconic quote 'taste the feeling' this relates well as it relates to the relationship the two brothers have.

  1. Hi Jamie,

    Excellent effort here. Well done.

You have done a nice analysis of the Diesel advert, but I would've liked to have seen a bit more discussion on the type of camera language used and why. Here's what I suggest, as you were meant to do another one as well - one you chose, please can you focus on that.

So choose a tv ad of your choice and analyse in the same way but trying to talk a bit more about the camera angles and shots used and what effect they have on the audience.

    Thanks
    Mr H
